Martin Shore, director of Take Me To The River, is co-teaching a course at The New School in Fall 2018.
This course celebrates the inter-generational and inter-racial musical influence of Memphis and New Orleans in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation. It looks at how these musical cultures influenced and inspired popular music around the world, and asks fundamental questions about the origins of American music.
The course includes a thorough examination of the combining of the many cultures that resulted in the unique musical world of New Orleans. A fascinating study of the past and the present, this class endeavors to show how the music of today ties directly back to America’s rich musical heritage.
